MATERIAL SELECTION

Silicone Sponge vs. Solid Silicone Gaskets: Selection Considerations

Sponge and solid silicone are not interchangeable categories. The useful choice depends on compression force, interface variation, environment, geometry and the actual material grade.

01

Start with the sealing path

A compressible structure may help accommodate variation in an interface, while a solid material may suit a differently defined geometry. Neither statement is enough to select a product without confirming the mating surfaces and target compression.

  • How much compression is available?
  • How consistent is the interface?
  • What temperature, media and exposure are expected?
02

Ask for grade-specific evidence

Density, hardness, compression set, chemical compatibility and temperature behavior are grade-specific properties. Request current documents for the candidate material and confirm how the part will be converted and installed.

NoteAvoid blanket statements such as ‘silicone is best’; selection must fit the actual environment.
