MAINTENANCE & REPLACEMENT

How to Measure an Existing Gasket for Replacement

An existing part is a useful reference, but it should be recorded as a set of dimensions, conditions and failure observations—not just photographed as an outline.

01

Capture the part and its installation

Measure overall dimensions, opening sizes, thickness, cross-section and hole locations. Photograph both sides, the mating interface and the installed position. Record whether the part has been compressed or damaged.

  • Overall outline and cut-outs
  • Cross-section and thickness
  • Location, orientation and joining method
02

Record why replacement is needed

Describe leakage, cracking, swelling, permanent deformation, service interval or other observed issue. This helps determine whether a replacement should reproduce the existing part or address an underlying interface condition.

NoteA visual or dimensional match does not itself guarantee technical interchangeability.
